How to buy clothes you will actually wear
Whether you love shopping for clothes or not, buying them is either one of the easiest ways to destroy your budget or save yourself thousands of dollars throughout the years.
That’s why I am going to share some super simple tips I use when it comes to buying clothes for myself. I hope it helps you solve some of your clothing dilemmas, too!
Let’s get to it!
Know what style of clothes you feel great in
Do you like fitted clothes, loose fitting clothes, do you like wearing shorter, mid-length, or longer clothes? What are your favorite types of clothes?
For example you may love leggings but are not comfortable with your behind being out for everyone to see. So, in this case you may want to wear tunic tops. Since they will still give you the comfort you want while solving the problem of you walking down the street relaxed instead of stressing all day wishing you had something to cover your butt.
For example – I like long flowy dresses that do not cling to my body but they must have pockets because I don’t like wearing a purse all the time just because I’m wearing a dress. I do not like clothes that cling to my body. Maybe you like knee length but not down to the ankles. You know what you like as a woman. And there are definitely clothes in your closet that you do not want to wear because you just don’t like them.
On the same token you probably have five to ten favorite outfits that you wear all the time. Ask yourself — what is it about those specific items that you enjoy? Trust me when I tell you they all have something in common. Is it the cut? Maybe you like the way it falls on your body. Maybe it hides what you consider a problem area. Or maybe you it feels great on your skin.
What fabrics feel good on your skin
What fabrics do you love? Do polyester blends make you itch. (I know I can’t wear 100% polyester anything) Do you sweat a lot and prefer dry wicking clothes. Or maybe you love cotton because you want your skin to breathe. (I’m her). Do you hate wearing acrylic sweaters or whatever else because it makes your skin itch. But you may also have another sweater that you love because it’s so comfortable and feels great on your skin.
What about that dress – that you know you can’t stand because it keeps riding up, that you refuse to stop wearing. Go to your closet look at the tag to see what material it’s made of.
I know what fabrics feel amazing on my body and before I waste my time to try on the dress I looked at the tag to see the composition of what it’s made of. I am not a fan of 100% polyester anything or 100% acrylic anything because it itches. Therefore, I refuse to spend more money on items whose fabrics and materials I know I’m not going to wear anyway. Why? Because I will keep stuffing my closet full of crap that I am NOT going to wear.
What brands do you like for certain articles of clothing?
If you are fortunate to be able to buy all of your clothing from one brand all the time and have a unicorn hit of an outfit then kudos! I’m happy for you. But for those of us who are not as fortunate you may find yourself liking your jeans from brand A. Your tops from brand B. Your underwear from brand C. Suits from brand D. And your fancy dresses from brand E. Your day-to-day dresses from Brand F. And so on and so forth. That is perfectly okay.
Knowing what works for you is way less expensive and will help you with the “how” to buy clothes you will actually wear. It will remove so much stress. Let’s face it! You know you don’t like that brand for such-and-such jeans. So stop wasting your precious time hoping that this one time it’ll work out.
So, there you have it. When it comes to buying clothes you will actually wear: know your body type. Purchase clothes that feel good on and know the particular brands that make what YOU like when it comes to different pieces of clothing. When you have a closet with clothes you love, getting dressed is easier. Plus you save two of your valuable resources – your time and your money.
